Winnie Out of The Way? Stanley Ho to List SJM

Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM), the largest casino operator in Macau, started bookbuilding yesterday for an IPO that aims to bring in between HK$3.85 billion and HK$5.1 billion ($494 million and $654 million). If the deal is completed, it will be the third largest IPO in Hong Kong this year after China Railway Construction Corporation and Want Want China Holdings.

However, SJM has trimmed its expectations quite significantly since its most recent attempt to go public in January when it was testing the market for a deal of up to $1 billion.

Shun Tak Leaks Email About Harbor Mile Land Purchase

The curse of the fat finger has struck one of China’s most secretive commercial dynasties as an e-mail between top executives of Shun Tak Corporation has erroneously revealed plans for developing one of the last pieces of the lucrative waterfront in Macau.

The property, in one of the world’s hottest gambling destinations, is worth about $500 million.

Macau Government Meets Casino Operators

The Secretary for Economy and Finance, Mr Francis Tam Pak Yuen, met with the management of six casino concessionaires to exchange views on the development of the industry.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mr Tam disclosed that the discussions were focused on the commission rate on VIP chips and the number of tables.

Stanley Ho Drops Oceanus Project, But Extends Jai Alai Casino

Last week’s announced slowing of casino development and fixing of commission rates for junket operators was welcomed by the director of Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM), Dr Stanley Ho Hung-sun yesterday as necessary to stop the “cut throat” competition between operators.

“I think it is excellent news for Macau in general. It is high time to take care of the gaming sections problems,” he said. “It is no good with all the six operators always fighting together using cut throat measures of getting customers into their casino, this is not correct because there is enough room for all six of us.”

Stanley Ho’s Shun Tak Holding Makes US$128 Million Profit

Shun Tak, the holding company of Macau gaming and gambling magnate Dr Stanley Ho, said Tuesday that in 2007 it had posted a net profit of US$128 million, which was a rise of 52.7 percent against 2006, a year in which profit totalled US$85 million.

Shun Tak, which has interests in the sea and air transport, hotel and real estate sectors, also said that the number of passengers carried on the Hong Kong-Macau route was 14 million, which was a year-on-year rise of 15 percent.

Melco International Development Profit Falls 5%

Ahead of it’s City of Dreams Topping-out Ceremony on 1 April 2008 at 12.10pm, comes the the news that casino operator Melco International Development Ltd. said Monday that its 2007 net profit fell 5 percent because of a one-off gain in the previous year.

The Hong Kong-listed company said its net profit in the 12 months ended Dec. 31 was HK$2.69 billion (US$346 million; ?219 million), down from HK$2.84 billion in 2006.

The Lowdown on Macau Casinos

It has been a year of activity and inactivity, events and non-events, giddy successes and flops, and most of all, lessons on what to do or not to in Macau.Stanley Ho’s SJM unveiled its answer to the new operators, the Grand Lisboa, in February 2007. Then came Crown Macau in April 2007, the gargantuan Venetian Macao in September 2007, followed by MGM Grand Macau in December 2007, followed lastly by Stanley Ho’s Ponte 16 Casino on 1 February 2008.

Some readers have raised eyebrows on the lack of commentary on my part on the new SJM properties, saying that I focused purely on the new entrants to the market.

Rafael Hui Has His Eyes on Becoming Macau Chief Executive

Rumors are flying that Rafael Hui Si- yan has his eyes on becoming Macau’s next chief executive. National People’s Congress Standing Committee member Dr Stanley Ho, who is in Beijing, was ominously silent about it yesterday.

The refusal by the “god of gambling” to say anything on the subject suggests that there is more to that rumor than meets the eye.

At Long Last The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge to Go Ahead

The governments of Hong Kong, Guangdong, and Macau yesterday endorsed the financing scheme for bridges linking the three places and the massive project will soon proceed to public tenders. Macau’s casino magnate Dr Stanley Ho has said that he is interested in bidding for the project.

It is expected a number of state- owned enterprises will play a major role in building the bridges expected to cost between US$4-5 billion. The Hong Kong listed China Communication Construction Company and China Railway have a long history in building infrastructure projects in the mainland, Hong Kong and overseas.
