“Our dreams are taking shape. In approximately one year, City of Dreams will begin to welcome visitors from all over the world,” said Lawrence Ho, Co-Chairman and CEO of MPEL at the topping out ceremony. “Macau is transforming from a gaming-focused destination into a leisure hot spot. City of Dreams will continue to drive this phenomenon and usher in a new era of gaming and entertainment in Macau.”

In addition to approximately 2,200 guest rooms and a wide range of restaurants and bars, City of Dreams will offer a kaleidoscope of entertainment options including stylish nightclubs, live music venues, free attractions and the spectacular Dragone show. The resort will also incorporate a 420,000-square-foot casino with over 550 gaming tables and 1,500 gaming machines.

One of the iconic landmarks of City of Dreams will be a free attraction that will provide visitors with a totally immersive experience, unlike anything they have seen in Asia or elsewhere in the world. Housed in a unique dome-shaped theatre, the production will combine high-definition video content, a customized music score, thousands of theatrical lights and a variety of sensory effects to create a spectacular 10-minute visual extravaganza that is sure to become a must-see for every visitor to Macau.

Renowned for spectacular and imaginative productions, <a href="http://http//macaudailyblog.com/macau-tourism/dragone-city-of-dreams-show-looking-for-staff/"title="Dragone" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/http');">Dragone will stage a permanent show at City of Dreams. Founder Franco Dragone will personally direct the breathtaking water-themed show, created specifically for City of Dreams, which is due to open in Macau in the second half of 2009.

A variety of musical performances by well-known regional acts, emerging artists and cover bands will be staged at a live concert venue that can accommodate up to 1,500 people.

The different styles of accommodation at City of Dreams will meet the diverse tastes of the wide spectrum of visitors the resort will attract from Asia and around the world. Each hotel will also offer its own individual spa and leisure facilities.

“We introduced the Crown brand into Macau in 2007 with the opening of Crown Macau, which has quickly become the property of choice for high-rolling VIP customers in Macau,” said Mr. James Packer, Executive Chairman of Crown Limited, and Co-Chairman and Director of MPEL. “We are very excited about extending the Crown brand in Macau, which is synonymous with a luxury six-star experience, through the opening of the Crown Towers Cotai at City of Dreams. City of Dreams is testament to our optimism about the future rapid development of the Macau market.”

City of Dreams will also feature a broad range of restaurants, noodle bars, cafes and lounges. These food and beverage venues will be located throughout the resort offering fine dining experiences as well as casual meals.

The resort will be home to some of the world’s most sought-after and acclaimed brands, with approximately 175,000 square feet of boutiques featuring high-end fashion labels as well as premium jewellery and watch brands.

Phase one of the City of Dreams resort will feature the casino, restaurants, retail boutiques, nightclubs, the iconic audio visual attraction, Crown Towers and Hard Rock Hotel. Phase one will be completed during the first half of 2009 with the date of the grand opening to be set early next year. The operation of the entire City of Dreams will require the support of 12,000 employees, which the company intends to recruit through a series of career fairs in Macau and throughout Asia starting in the summer of 2008.

The world economy remained strong in the first three quarters of 2007, but the momentum tended to slowdown in the fourth quarter; however, the economy of Macau was not much affected due to the support from Mainland China. Driven by the rapid development of the gaming and tourism sector, investment surged substantially and local consumption remained robust; as a result, the economic growth for 2007 was far higher than 2006.

GDP of Macao for 2007 was estimated at US$19.20 billion, up by 27.3% in real terms and the per-capita GDP amounted to US$ 36,357. GDP for the fourth quarter of 2007 recorded an increase of 22.1% in real terms; meanwhile, the rates for the first and second quarters were revised downward from 25.7% and 31.6% to 25.2% and 30.8% respectively, but that for the third quarter was revised upward from 30.9% to 32.2%; for 2006, the rate of growth maintained at 17.0%.

The favourable factors that contributed to Macao’s relatively high economic growth in 2007 included:

- the continuous increase and improvement in the gaming and tourism facilities, rising number of visitor arrivals led the annual gross gaming revenue (excluding gratuities) soared significantly by 45.8% compared with 2006;
- the bright prospects for the prosperous gaming and tourism sector boosted the investment up by 23.0% in real terms over 2006;
- the annual number of visitor arrivals rose by 22.7% to 26,992,995, together with the increases in the per-capita spending of visitors in all quarters, total visitor spending (excluding gaming expenses) for 2007 registered a 13.9% growth in real terms;
- the notable increase in the employed population and employment income drove the annual private consumption expenditure up by 10.7% year-on-year in real terms.

Changes in the economic structure of Macao

As regards the economic structure, the following changes are observed in 2007:

- the 45.6% surge in the export of gaming services in 2007 fueled net exports of goods and services (exports of goods and services minus imports of goods and services) to accelerate at a faster pace than the level of overall economic growth, contributing to an apparent increase in the relative importance of net exports of goods and services, from 38.3% in 2006 to 43.3% in 2007;
- investment (gross fixed capital formation + changes in inventories) went up by 23.0% in 2007, lower than the overall economic growth, bringing its relative importance in GDP down from 27.5% in 2006 to 26.5% in 2007;
- although increases were registered in both private consumption expenditure and government final consumption expenditure, yet the rates of growth were lower than that of the overall economy. In consequence, the relative importance of private consumption expenditure in GDP went down from 26.2% in 2006 to 22.8% in 2007, while that of government final consumption expenditure decreased from 8.1% to 7.4%.

City of Dreams Complex

According to the Daily Telegraph, Crown Macau owned by <a href="http://macaudailyblog.com/macau/macau-business/melco-pbl/"title="Melco PBL" target="_blank" >Melco PBL Entertainment, James Packer’s first casino foray in the city had a rocky start after its opening in May last year.

But its fortunes have been given a major boost as a result of a strategic deal late last year with a Hong Kong-listed junkets operator, A-Max, and the decision to refocus the casino entirely on the VIP market.

The aggressive deal with A-Max, which involves higher than industry average total commissions of up to 1.35 per cent, has helped bring VIP gamblers to the upmarket casino, taking market share off more experienced operators, such as Macau veteran <a href="http://macaudailyblog.com/macau/macau-business/stanley-ho/"title="Dr Stanley Ho" target="_blank" >Stanley Ho and new players Galaxy and the <a href="http://macau.a2zcasino.eu/macau-casino/sands-casino-macau/"title="Sands Macao" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/macau.a2zcasino.eu');">Macau Sands.

“Thanks to A-Max’s junkets, Melco PBL’s market share improved substantially from 5.7 per cent in November to 18.1 per cent in February, making Crown Macau the busiest casino in the world in terms of betting volume,” Credit Suisse’s Hong Kong-based gambling analyst, Gabriel Chan, says in a bullish new report on the company.

“If we focus on market share in the high-roller segment alone, the improvement was even more astonishing with market share increasing from 6.6 per cent in November to 24.8 per cent in February.”

“A-Max junkets generated about $US5.3 billion ($5.8 billion) in rolling chip turnover in February, up about 5 per cent month on month,” he said.

“In our view, there is room for further growth.

“We expect A-Max’s junkets to generate on average $US6.3 billion rolling chip turnover per month in 2008.” Packer’s Crown now has a 37.9 per cent stake in the company, which listed on the US Nasdaq market in late 2006, alongside the Hong Kong-based Melco, operated by Stanley Ho’s son Lawrence Ho.

Macau observers say the aggressive deal struck with A-Max has seen the junket operator bring in substantial new volumes of high-rollers to Crown Macau, which has been difficult for its rivals to match.

“There has been a dramatic shift in the market since December,” one Macau veteran said last week.

“Stanley Ho’s junket operators have been struggling. Galaxy has been losing market share as well.

“It has not been easy for them to find the consolidators who can bring in the same horsepower as A-Max.”

Under the deal, A-Max, a consolidator of junket operators, receives a total commission rate of between 1.2 per cent and 1.35 per cent from Crown.

A-Max in turn pays its junket operators up to 1.2 per cent.

In the past, Macau casino operators would only pay around 1.1 or 1.2 per cent in total to junket operators to bring in high-rolling gamblers to their premises.

Observers say the financial viability of the Crown Macau deal with A-Max, which involves a potentially higher total commission structure, is dependent on A-Max being able to deliver high volumes, which has so far been the case.

Macau gaming turnover continues to increase, with total monthly revenues twice the level of the Las Vegas strip in recent months.

Unlike last year, which saw a flood of new casino openings in Macau, 2008 is not expected to see any substantial new supply come on to the market, giving the existing operators a chance to consolidate their positions.

The past few months have also seen Crown enjoy an increase in its “hold rate”, or house percentage retained, which has also helped the success of its operations. “Crown’s hold rate was terrible,” said one observer.

“It used to be around 2.2 per cent on baccarat, but now it is 2.7 per cent.”

Crown’s success has put pressure on its rivals to increase the commissions paid to junket operators. As Chan notes in his report, the junket operators now have more bargaining power in Macau than the casino operators.

Chan says that Galaxy’s market share has dropped from 14.9 per cent in November to only 10.3 per cent in February.

“Galaxy has extended credits to select junket operators and raised its commission rate to 1.25 per cent, even higher than the 1.2 per cent A-Max is paying junket operators,” he notes.

The new competition from Crown has also prompted Sheldon Adelson’s massive Venetian, which opened in mid-2007, to revise its commission structure, a move which has helped to boost its market share by 2 percentage points to 12 per cent in February. The Venetian’s commission rate is now 1.26 per cent.

Chan predicts that Melco PBL’s earnings before interest, tax and depreciation could reach as high as $US280 million in 2008. “With a total construction cost of about $US570 million, we estimate Crown’s payback period to be only about two years,” he says.

The new vessels will be identical to those currently under construction at Austal’s Henderson shipyard and will be delivered in the first half of 2009.

Completion of the entire 14-vessel order will see the number of Austal vessels delivered to China/Hong Kong waters grow to 52, reinforcing Austal’s success in the region.

Commenting on the order Executive Chairman, John Rothwell said “It is a pleasing start to the year to see the Cotai WaterJet order expand to 14 ferries based on the success of the initial deliveries already operating between Hong Kong and Macau.”

Of the initial ten vessels ordered by VMSL in 2006, five have already been completed, with the construction of two catamaran ferries for another Hong Kong operator continuing at Austal’s shipyard in Tasmania, Australia.

The four Cotai Waterjets passenger ferries will capitalise on the rapidly growing demand for the Hong Kong to Macau service, currently the world’s largest route in terms of passenger numbers. Driven by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation’s development of the Cotai Strip, traffic on the route is likely to double in the next three years.

‘Macau Daily Times’ Chief Editor John Lawrence says the nearly 7-month-old newspaper reports news from mainland China “without fear or favour”

There are two things I’ve always wanted to do: Write my own newspaper column and — more recently — edit a daily newspaper.

I got the first chance in the 1980s and 1990s when I started the social awareness column The Cutting Edge (by Watchman) while employed as training editor for the Nation group of newspapers in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

Of course, it’s history that I got myself summarily deported when I exposed a wee bit too much corruption in the former British colony. It’s not wise to write pejoratively about an African country’s immigration department.

The second chance came in April 2007 when the yet-to-be-born daily newspaper the Macau Daily Times advertised for staff through the Journalism Education Association in Australia. I got the job and thus began my new career as chief editor of an English language daily in the former Portuguese enclave off China. It was my 11th assignment in a foreign country.

The Macau Daily Times was launched on June 1, 2007, taking its place beside a burgeoning number of English, Chinese and Portuguese newspapers and magazines in a territory that has gained pre-eminence as the world’s gambling mecca, outstripping Las Vegas as it heads for an annual gaming turnover of about $12.5 billion.

The Macau Daily Times achieves much from a very small editorial staff. Besides the chief editor, there is a director, four young journalists and a designer, who produces the newspaper on an Apple Mac, using the InDesign system.

There are some surprises in this multicultural outfit. For a start, all four reporters did their journalism training at Australian universities. None of them had previous exposure to daily journalism, apart from a young woman of Portuguese-English parentage.

The others are an Australian who spent some years in the Netherlands, a young Cantonese journalist and a Calcutta-born woman who went to Australia when she was 10. The director, who is in overall charge of the editorial department, is Portuguese Angolan and the managing director is South African. The designer is Macanese; that is, he is of mixed Portuguese and Chinese blood.

The Portuguese and Chinese elements are important at press conferences as the official languages are Cantonese and Portuguese. It can be frustrating if you speak only English.

The Macau Daily Times is a 28-page tabloid segmented into local, Chinese, Asia/Pacific, world, business, cultural and sporting news. It relies heavily on international news, taking the AFP wire service. The ownership is Chinese, although the actual owners are not named in the paper’s credits. At present there is no staff photographer and the journalists take their own pictures.

From an outsider’s point of view, albeit from that of an old Chinawatcher, the Times is fearless in the way it presents news from the mainland. Mainland virtues and vices are reported without fear or favour.

Expatriates, who now outnumber the Portuguese population, find the Macau Daily Times instantly appealing.

Asia’s first Manchester United merchandising store opened its doors yesterday to a throng of fans and media pushing for a glimpse of retired star Ole Gunner Solskjaer. Many of the more than 150 local and Hong Kong fans waited for more than four hours for the former English Premier League star to open the first floor of the almost 1,400 square metre “Manchester United Experience”.

The store, located in the Venetian Macao’s Grand Canal Shoppes, is the club’s first licensed merchandising outlet in Asia and will be run in-house by the Venetian’s marketing arm.
Manchester is one of the most popular sporting team’s in the world, boasting some 75 million fans, with a large proportion of them in Asia. The team played a sold-out friendly match at Macau Stadium last July and were the first official guests of the Venetian, which opened the following month.

The first floor of the store is filled with footballs, tracksuits, key rings and jerseys stamped with the team logo. The involvement of Nike, a major sponsor of Man U, also sees paraphernalia on sale from the other Premier League and European sides the company sponsors, such as FC Barcelona and Arsenal.

However the fans, a number of whom were ferried in from Hong Kong by the Venetian, were there to see Solskjaer. The Norwegian was signed by the club in 1996 for 1.5 million pounds and is now considered a legend. During his 11 years he scored some 126 goals for the club including a famous strike during injury time against Bayern Munich to secure the UEFA Champions League for Manchester.

The player is now employed by Manchester as an ambassador. “I received many letter from Chinese and Hong Kong fans during my career,” he said yesterday.

“This is not only going to be a Manchester United store it’s going to be a Manchester United experience.”

However fans had to pay for the star’s autograph yesterday. Anyone purchasing a minimum of US$112.50 of merchandise was invited to join a queue for an autograph, which extended outside the store.

The “experience” part of the store, a second and third level, is scheduled for opening in September and will include memorabilia and interactive sporting displays.
On the lower level Ronaldo jerseys can be purchased for US$116,- with a standard black or white jersey selling for US$57.50. Water bottles carrying the team logo sell for US$6.15 and key rings US$8.75.

Zhang Yongchun, director of the Justice Affairs Department of the Macau Special Administrative Region, disclosed to media that they would listen to the opinions of different parties and consummate two draft laws on cracking down on online crime and pornography. Zhang said that the recent spread of celebrities’ indecent photos in Hong Kong had caused wide attention in Macau. With the popularization of the Internet, especially with more students going online, it was urgent for them to make legislation for online crime.

Zhang said the Macau government was keeping a close watch on the influence of the Hong Kong incident on Macau and the possible problems. Though Macau still has not a special law for online crimes of this type, there are some regulations that ban the spread of erotic information online.

Figures due this week are expected to show that Macau is bigger than Las Vegas. The former Portuguese enclave in China raked in US$10.4 billion in gaming winnings in 2007, virtually matching the 2006 take for Clark County, the Nevada jurisdiction that includes Las Vegas and surrounding areas.

If Macau misses in the 2007 data, it’s only a matter of time before it leaves Las Vegas twinkling in its rearview mirror. Macau already far outearns the famous Las Vegas Strip, even though the Strip has a 50% advantage in the number of both visitors and casinos. Minimum bets in the Chinese territory usually set at HK$100 (US$12.85), compared with a less than US$1 in some Vegas locations, allow Macau to take in far more per customer and per table than Las Vegas.

Three of the biggest names in Las Vegas - Wynn Resorts, Las Vegas Sands (owners of the Venetian), and MGM Grand Macau - have built mammoth properties that would fit right in back in Vegas. But size, whether it’s your square footage or bankroll, isn’t everything.

“We were just in Las Vegas and this isn’t Vegas,” an American engineer living in Taiwan (name withheld by request) says in the midst of the Venetian’s seemingly endless, teeming casino floor. His Chinese wife enthusiastically concurs. “Is there more to it, outside?” she asks, hopefully.

Similarities are different
Those comments highlight danger signs for Macau as it tries to expand its market beyond day-tripping gamblers from mainland China and Hong Kong. Its vast new properties need regional and long-haul guests looking for a broader vacation experience. Ultimately, it’s not Macau’s similarities with Las Vegas but its differences and its skill in emphasizing and exploiting them that will determine its success in attracting those guests. That’s partly because even Macau’s similarities with Las Vegas mask big differences.

For its earliest days, Las Vegas had top stars on its stages (and at its tables and cocktail lounges). Particularly since the 1980s, Vegas hotels expanded from their original desert themes and from the basics to include world-class shopping, gourmet dining, full-scale theater productions, galleries, museums, clubs and more.

Casino resorts in Vegas now earn half of their revenue from non-gambling activities, said Bill Eadington, director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at University of Nevada, Reno. “Given that Macau is building on the Las Vegas Strip mega-casino model, I expect it will try to follow the same approach,” the economics professor said.

Basically, none of the above evolved in Macau during the 20th century, and there’s skepticism about whether the Las Vegas model would work in Macau. When the Sands Macao opened four years ago, the casino was mobbed and its upscale restaurants empty - they’ve now been removed, in favor of more gaming tables and downmarket eats. Macau’s average stay per visitor and average spending have remained stubbornly steady despite expanded temptations and doubled visitor numbers over the past five years.

“Macau has built properties based on Las Vegas’s 30 years of experience, but the Chinese market doesn’t have any experience with the Vegas product,” Andy Nazarechuk, dean of the University of Nevada Las Vegas-Singapore’s William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, said. “Once they learn, there will be money to be made.”

In Macau, the non-casino attractions have barely begun. The Venetian, Macau’s first Las Vegas-scale integrated resort, includes big name shopping in a 200-plus unit mall, Asia’s largest convention venue, and the Venetian Arena, the 15,000 seat arena that’s already hosted The Police, Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, the Cleveland Cavaliers of US basketball, and Pete Sampras’ victory over Roger Federer in a tennis clash of the ages.

Not ready for prime time?
The Venetian’s international drawing power is broadening Macau’s visitor base, but at this stage that may create more problems than it solves. The curtain has yet to rise on Cirque du Soleil at the Venetian and similar shows at other venues, and a range other entertainment on the drawing boards.

The Venetian Macau is the first property in Cotai, the landfill connecting Macau’s two outer islands that’s planned to be its version of the Las Vegas Strip. Right now, there’s nothing but the Venetian and a lot of construction cranes, steel frames and moved earth. Many guests must get the impression they have been dropped - to pick up the Las Vegas desert metaphor - at the single oasis in a vast wasteland, although they’re just minutes away from a full dose of Macau’s east-meets-west charm.

There’s a different aesthetic at work in Macau than in Las Vegas. Here mainland tourists happily snap photos of the Venetian’s fake European historical buildings rather than photograph the genuine 16th century articles in Macau’s historic center. “We prefer fake things,” a Chinese friend said, noting that Asia is the land of the Rolex and Louis Vuitton knockoff. But in Macau they don’t get the joke on the biggest fake of all.

Las Vegas is the land of the Elvis Presley impersonator, deeply rooted in kitsch back to the early desert motif hotels: The Sahara, The Aladdin, The Sands, and celebrating the high priestess of American tropical tackiness, The Flamingo. The next generation progressed from Circus Circus and Caesar’s Palace to kitsch on steroids with scale models of the Sphinx, the Eiffel Tower, New York skyline, and Venice. Even though operators like Steve Wynn have brought modern masters’ art, Michelin star chefs, and designer labels to Vegas, the socio-cultural baseline remains Elvis’s peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich. There may be serious money and serious events there, but no one takes Vegas seriously.

Macau’s copies of Vegas imitations are not presented as punchlines of an elaborate joke but as genuine luxury articles. Singapore, which is building up its own nest of casinos, recognized the danger. It insisted that the proposals for its two casino resorts be original designs and specifically prohibited imitations of other destinations.

Runway fashion
The Venetian Macao is undeniably a marvel. The world’s second-largest building (behind Boeing’s plant for assembling 747s), built to suck through 100,000-plus visitors daily and leave them fractionally poorer while treating them to gondoliers paddling through indoor canals, handpainted frescoes on the ceilings, and the chance to walk away as millionaires, or at least live for a while as if they were.

But the Venetian shares less with an exclusive resort destination than it does with an airport, right down the Samsonite and See’s Candies outlets. Parts of the Venetian (just like the platinum lounges at airports) are sumptuous but overall it feels overwhelming and isolated. Once inside the Venetian, it seems impossible to get out. It also seems as if there’s nowhere to go, exactly the way management wants it. Yet the Venetian is within walking distance of Taipa Village, one of the most engaging sections of Macau, embodying its 500-year legacy of Chinese and European cultures.

Instead of its fakes, no matter how fabulous, Macau should be promoting its real heritage as a crossroads between east and west in a relaxed setting more like southern Europe than southern China. Putting the spotlight on that heritage would spread spending beyond the casino resort fortresses to keep homegrown businesses happy.

More importantly, it would differentiate Macau among destinations as gaming spreads in the region. Within two years, Singapore will have a casino resort by the creators of the Venetian in a unique high-rise package, and another by Malaysia’s Genting/Star Cruises on a beach resort island featuring a Universal Studios theme park. Malaysia, Cambodia and South Korea already have casino resorts, as does Australia. (Like Vegas, all are particularly friendly to Chinese players.) Vietnam, Thailand and Japan are seriously considering getting into the business.

What will set Macau apart aren’t gambling and Vegas imitations, but its unique Mediter-Asian heritage. Macau’s real success, big enough to justify the billions invested, won’t be Asia’s Las Vegas but as the world’s only Macau.

The Police tour was a resounding success with fans and critics united in their enthusiastic endorsement of what was considered by many as the tour of the year. From the opening notes of Message In A Bottle through a set list which included the mega-hits: Roxanne, Synchronicity, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Every Breath You Take, When The World Is Running Down, and Spirits In The Material World, the energy that Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers exude on stage was matched only by the exuberant response of the audience.

With over 2,200,000 tickets sold to date and more concerts to be announced, The Police tour was definitely the hottest ticket of the year, with many fans still scrambling to buy a seat days before the event. It began on May 28 in Vancouver and has already played 40 concert dates in North America and 26 performances in Europe, with a return engagement in North America prior to their 2007 appearances in Mexico City, Monterrey, Buenos Aires, Rio De Janeiro and Santiago Chile.

In 2008, in addition to their magnificent turn at The Venetian Arena, The Police will continue to perform in Singapore, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

The Police performance in the Venetian Arena was the band’s first appearance in Macau.
The band has recently released a greatest hits collection, “The Police” to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their first single “Fall Out”. This consummate collection brings together the biggest hits from the band’s five original studio albums and includes their very first single, 1977’s “Fall Out.”

A portion of the proceeds from this tour will be donated to WaterAid, an international NGO, founded in 1981 and dedicated to reducing poverty by improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene education.
