It has been a year of activity and inactivity, events and non-events, giddy successes and flops, and most of all, lessons on what to do or not to in Macau.Stanley Ho’s SJM unveiled its answer to the new operators, the Grand Lisboa, in February 2007. Then came Crown Macau in April 2007, the gargantuan Venetian Macao in September 2007, followed by MGM Grand Macau in December 2007, followed lastly by Stanley Ho’s Ponte 16 Casino on 1 February 2008.
Some readers have raised eyebrows on the lack of commentary on my part on the new SJM properties, saying that I focused purely on the new entrants to the market.
Deutsche Bank Gives Melco PBL the Thumbs Up

Deutsche Bank has given James Packer’s jointly owned Melco PBL a big vote of confidence, upgrading its first-quarter earnings estimates by 43 per cent. “After our first visit to Macau, we remain bullish on the phenomenal growth in Crown’s VIP business,” analysts from the investment bank said.
Deutsche Bank estimates that Melco’s Crown Macau casino achieved a rolling turnover of almost $HK50 billion ($6.9 billion) last month, representing about 23 per cent of Macau’s VIP play. Deutsche raised its first-quarter earnings before interest depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) by 43 per cent to $70million.
Melco PBL Losses Narrows Thanks to Crown Macau

Melco PBL Entertainment Ltd., a developer and owner of casinos and resorts in Macau, said Tuesday its fourth-quarter loss narrowed, helped by results from its Crown Macau casino.The company’s quarterly loss narrowed to $36.5 million, or 3 cents per share, compared with a loss of $53 million, or 5 cents per share in the prior-year quarter. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected a break-even results.
Revenue rose to $179.8 million, from $17.9 million last year. Crown Macau revenue totaled $153.6 million.
