Macau Visitor Arrivals for January 2008 Up by 16.3%

Despite blistery and snowy weather conditions, Macau still managed to increase visitor arrivals to 2,371,754 in January 2008, a year-on-year increase of 16.3%. Visitors from Mainland China (1,421,782) and Southeast Asia (109,738) grew by 23.0% and 58.2% respectively, while those from Hong Kong (581,860) decreased by 3.7%. Same-day visitors accounted for 52.3% of the total arrivals, at 1,240,119.

The majority of the visitors came from Mainland China and Hong Kong, which accounted for 59.9% and 24.5% of the total respectively. Among the Mainland visitors, 42.2% (600,324) travelled to Macao under the Individual Visit Scheme.

During Chinese New Year Macau Hotel Occupancy Up By Record 23%

Macau welcomed almost 720,000 visitors during the Chinese New Year “Golden Week” holiday (Lunar New Year Eve to 6th day of Lunar Year), a slight growth of 0.45% over the same period in 2007. More than 390,000 or 54% of the arrivals were from Mainland China, a growth of 1.03%. During the period, an average of over 13,000 hotel rooms were rented out per day, a surge of 23%.

From February 6 to 14, Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) and the Provincial Tourism Administrations of Guangdong and Fujian have jointly operated the “Chinese New Year Tourism Notifying System” to ensure enjoyable holidays for visitors.

Package Tours to Macau Up by 33.6%

Visitor arrivals in package tours reached 431,655 in December 2007, up notably by 33.6% year-on-year. Visitors from Mainland China (292,812) and Taiwan, China (27,935) surged by 28.3% and 130.0% respectively compared with December 2006; however, visitors from Hong Kong (36,462) dropped by 3.4%. For the whole year of 2007, visitors arrived in package tours jumped by 44.7% over 2006 to 4,233,714.

In December 2007, the number of Macao residents travelling in package tours decreased by 5.7% year-on-year to 25,553. Mainland China, Japan and Thailand were the three most popular tour itineraries, which accounted for 79.3%, 4.7% and 4.6% of the total respectively. For the whole year of 2007, Macao residents travelling in package tours dropped by 22.1% over 2006 to 212,107.

Air Macau Launching More Scheduled Flights to Japan

Air Macau announced that it will launch scheduled flights to Fukuoka, Okinawa, Nagoya and in 2009 to Hokkaido, in Japan, following the lifting of restrictions imposed by the Japanese authorities.

David Fei, the executive director of Air Macau, also said that the airline would have a daily flight to Osaka as of May and that it would like run a flight to Tokyo in 2010.

There has been a court ruling that rejected an application to suspend the services. The Macau Government expects ferry services between Taipa and Hong Kong to soon resume again.

Macau Package Tours Up a Whopping 46.1%

Macau saw 459,093 visitor arrivals in package tours in November 2007, up notably by 58.5% year-on-year. Visitors from Mainland China (331,741), Hong Kong (33,005) and Taiwan, China (25,183) recorded remarkable growth of 54.7%, 52.0% and 85.3% respectively compared with November 2006. In the first eleven months of 2007, visitors arrived in package tours surged by 46.1% over the same period of 2006 to 3,802,059. This come hot on the news that Macau is now busting at it’s seams!

In November, the number of Macao residents travelling in package tours decreased by 27.5% year-on-year to 15,777. Mainland China, Japan and Thailand were the three most popular tour itineraries, which accounted for 74.5%, 6.6% and 5.7% of the total respectively. In the first eleven months of 2007, Macao residents travelling in package tours dropped by 24.0% over the same period of 2006 to 186,554.

Macau to Overtake Hong Kong as Tourist Destination

Hot on the news that Hong Kong’s Disneyland is struggling financially due to a drop in the number of visitors comes the news that Macau visitor numbers is close to overtake those of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong registered more than 28 million visitor arrivals, an increase of more than 10 percent on 2006 and a record. If growth rates are maintained, Macau will take the lead this year.

Macau Receives Record Numbers of Christmas Visitors

Again Macau breaks new records with the arrival of about 779,000 vistors during the Christmas holidays, with at least thirty thousand Hong Kong people congesting the entry ways of Macau as most of them began their Christmas holidays on Tuesday.

Information from the Chinese language Macau Daily newspaper showed that the number of arrivals reached 55,000 as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. Among the arrivals, there were 20,000 Hong Kong tourists arriving in Macau via the ferry terminal, and 25,000 Mainland tourists of which 20,000 came in via the border gate.
