Six years ago, they were going to build a film school on that piece of land in Cotai. Now, they’re getting ready create a casino with a difference there. And maybe even a Playboy Club, too.
Macao Studio City, a HK$16 billion(US$2.05 billion) synergy-saturated gaming, entertainment, retail and resort development is slated to open in early 2009 on the Cotai Strip. It’s a project that’s changed “script” and “cast” as often as a Hong Kong soap opera, and it promises more drama over the next two to four years as well.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that visitor arrivals in package tours totalled 323,111 in December 2006, corresponding to a notable increase of 34.0% year-on-year. Among them, visitors from Mainland China (228,245) increased by 14.7% when those from Hong Kong (37,756) and Southeast Asia (21,765) recorded remarkable growths of 225.5% and 290.4% respectively. In 2006, total visitor arrivals in package tours grew 9.3% over 2005 to 2,925,724, while those from Mainland China accounted for 78.4% of the total.
Number of Macao residents travelling in package tours in December 2006 was 27,109, a slight increase of 0.1% year-on-year. Mainland China; Thailand; and Taiwan, China were the three most popular tour itineraries, which accounted for 76.8%, 5.5% and 4.4% of the total respectively. In 2006, Macao residents (272,444) travelling in package tours went down 7.6% compared with 2005.

The early Ming glazed copper-red pear-shaped vase, Yuhuchunping, produced during Emperor Hongwu’s reign (1368-1398), to be donated to the Macao Special Administrative Region in this ceremony, was purchased at a Hong Kong auction in May last year by Mr. Steve Wynn, Chairman of Wynn Resorts (Macau) S.A.. Costing approximately 78 million Hong Kong dollars, this extremely rare Chinese porcelain will be exhibited as part of the permanent collection of the Cultural Affairs Bureau’s Macao Museum.

Honesty Treasure International (0600), which sells finished leather to garment makers, acknowledged Thursday that chairman Pedro Chiang and executive director Miguel Wu Ka-i are being investigated over allegations of bribery by the Commission Against Corruption of Macau.
Wu informed the board of directors that he and Chiang are the people surnamed “Wu” and “Lam” cited in media reports recently, the company said in a statement. Chiang (also referred to as Lam) is believed to be a key person, Macau’s CAC said on its Web site Saturday, and is thought to have fled Macau to a Southeast Asian country via China last month.

News just comes through that Wynn Macau Phase Two now will open completely sometime in in the third quarter of 2007, instead of small stages throughout the year. They expect to have this phase completed by July 2007.

This is rather a good in depth article by Bill Simpson about Melco PBL and the problems it is facing in Macau. I do agree with Bill that Melco PBL will be a winner, but in my opinion not until mid 2008.
Melco PBL Entertainment’s IPO was on December 14th. The IPO began trading on December 19, 2006, when 53 million ADSs, representing 159 million ordinary shares, were priced at $19, over the initial price range of $16 to $18 per ADS.
