The activities of Macau’s gangsters, or triads are being kept in check by a plentiful market and the watchful eye of the Mainland government, according to a local university professor, reports Macau Daily Times.
Underworld figures that operate in casinos are being careful not to step out of line in fear of retribution from the Mainland government, Eilo Yu, assistant professor from the University of Macau’s (UM) department of government and public administration said yesterday.

Austal has signed a contract for four additional 47.5 metre passenger catamarans with Cotai WaterJets (Macao) Ltd, adding to the initial ten-vessel contract signed in 2006 by sister company Venetian Marketing Services Limited (VMSL).

The value of retail sales for the fourth quarter of 2007 was estimated at MOP4.2 billion (US$525 million). Retail sales of watches, clocks & jewellery took the largest share of 17% of the total, which was followed by sales of motor vehicles (13%), goods in department stores (12%), goods in supermarkets (9%) and adults’ clothing (9%).
The value of retail sales in the fourth quarter of 2007 registered an increase of 16% compared with the MOP3.6 billion in the preceding quarter. As against the MOP3.0 billion sales in the fourth quarter of 2006, the value of retail sales in this quarter grew remarkably by 40%.

The Macau government has selected seven international companies to present proposals for consultation on the first phase of construction of the light railway that is due to be finished in 2011, officials said Thursday.
Extending over 20 kilometers, the light railway is expected to cost around 4.2 billion patacas (US$525 million).

The Macau government put its proposal for a law to regulate the real estate brokerage sector out to public consultation, which will require agents to be registered and to pass an examination.
The Macau real estate sector has attracted real estate agencies from Hong Kong to Macau and led to the opening of several specialized companies, which will now be subject to regulation.

The Chief Executive, Mr Edmund Ho Hau Wah, said he believed that the verdict passed today by the Court of Final Appeal on Ao Man Long, a former official, was just.
