During Chinese New Year Macau Hotel Occupancy Up By Record 23%

welcomed almost 720,000 visitors during the Chinese New Year “Golden Week” holiday (Lunar New Year Eve to 6th day of Lunar Year), a slight growth of 0.45% over the same period in 2007. More than 390,000 or 54% of the arrivals were from Mainland China, a growth of 1.03%. During the period, an average of over 13,000 hotel rooms were rented out per day, a surge of 23%.

From February 6 to 14, Government Tourist Office (MGTO) and the Provincial Tourism Administrations of Guangdong and Fujian have jointly operated the “Chinese New Year Tourism Notifying System” to ensure enjoyable holidays for visitors.

Macau to Adjust Developments Around Guia Lighthouse

Following our earlier reports comes some good news that the Government is finally considering to review the construction and planning situation around the 90-meters high Guia Lighthouse.

The UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre recently send a letter to the Chinese national Commission raising serious concerns about it’s heritage status and the heights of two new developments surrounding it.

Macau to Overtake Hong Kong as Tourist Destination

Hot on the news that Hong Kong’s Disneyland is struggling financially due to a drop in the number of visitors comes the news that visitor numbers is close to overtake those of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong registered more than 28 million visitor arrivals, an increase of more than 10 percent on 2006 and a record. If growth rates are maintained, will take the lead this year.

Macau Historicans Want to Keep Lisboa Birdcage

SJM’s CEO guaranteed that the very first building of Hotel Lisboa will be maintained, while local historians appealed to him to consider carefully over the Hotel Lisboa demolition plan, as reported by blogmacau info.

Ho admitted that the Hotel Lisboa, inaugurated in 1970, is more like a ‘cultural relics’ to many people. The design of the complex like a bird’s cage is also connected with the principles of Fong Shui, and so it will be maintained.

Guia Lighthouse Issue Won’t Go Away

This is a continuation of our earlier report on the Guia Lighthouse height restrictions saga.

The local government has received documents sent by the cultural authorities in Beijing, addressing concerns over threats of a new residential building blocking the view to and from the Guia lighthouse, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Fernando Chui Sai On, said yesterday, addressing lawmakers at the Legislative Assembly.

May 1 | Labour Day, Golden Week

This is the start of the Chinese Labour Day Golden Week ???. will have an official Public Holiday on May 1, which is typically celebrated by a party hosted by The Federation of Workers’ Unions. As usual there also should be festivities around Macau Tower.

Last year received over 450,000 arrivals during the Labor Day “golden week” holiday, a growth of 10% over the same period in 2005. Of the 450,000 visitors, over 60% were from Mainland China and recorded an increase of 9%. With the Zuhai Border Gate opening on or before May 1, we can expect another huge number of visitors arrivals this Golden Week.
