Dr Stanley Ho Bows To His Three Wives

You must give it to the Dr Stanley Ho who is a healthy 85-year old and still is calling the shots in Macau. He just opened two casinos in the last two months, first in December 2006, the Babylon Casino followed yesterday by The Grand Lisboa. If that is not enough he is hoping to follow up with Ponte 16 Casino later this year as he wants to give the foreign invasion a run for their money, well I guess we just have to wait and see!

But, meanwhile at his palatial homes across Hong Kong, he bows to his wives.

Grand Lisboa Opens With a Bang

Billionaire gambling king Dr Stanley Ho celebrated the long-awaited opening Sunday of his Grand Lisboa casino, a gleaming gold complex. More than 15,000 gamblers on Sunday jammed into the new casino owned by Stanley Ho who is trying to fend off an invasion by Las Vegas tycoons who have been gobbling up market share in the booming Chinese territory of Macau.

10,000’s Expected For Grand Lisboa Opening

Tens of thousands of gamblers are expected to descend on Macau Sunday for the opening of a spectacular new high-rise casino in the booming Chinese gambling resort. Punters from Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan will queue for seats at the new Grand Lisboa where owners have promised to give 10,000 Hong Kong dollars (1,300 US dollars) to a random guest every 15 minutes. Please note this is the opening of the casino facilities only, not the hotel which is expected early 2008.

The six-hour, 31,000-US-dollar giveaway, which begins when the new casino opens at 10 p.m. Sunday, is expected to spark off a frenzy among casino fans in the former Portuguese colony.

Grand Lisboa To Open On 11 February 2007 (Update)

Update - It has been confirmed by SJM that the Grand Lisboa will have their soft opening on February 11, 2007 just in time for the lucrative Chinese Year, which is from February 18-20, 2007. Only the lower floor where the  casino is located will open to the public. Meanwhile construction on the hotel will continue with a planned opening mid 2007.

Macau Construction Boom Slowing Down Projects?

There is definitely a construction slowdown in Macau. The main problem seems to be getting highly qualified specialist contractors, such as interiors, finishing and joinery of which there are few in Macau, and they are all fully booked for the next few years ahead.

Macua Gaming Revenue in 2006 Up 22%

Gaming and gambling activities in Macau posted gross revenues of 55.884 billion patacas (US$6.985 billion) in 2006, a rise of 22 percent against the figures for 2005, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (GICB) said in Macau Monday.

Revenues from Macau’s 24 casinos totaled 54.998 million patacas, or 22.96 percent more than the total for 2005.

Perservation Campaign Guia Lighthouse (Update1)

Update 1 | A statement has been made that the height of the new building for the Central Government’s Liaison Office in Macau is being adjusted. The new building located at the foot of the Guia Hill, came under heavy criticism as it’s height was going to block the view of the Guia Lighthouse. The statement said that the building will be re-designed so that the new height will not obscure the Guia Lighthouse.

Thanks to Oiwan for this great article! This is what so scary about the rapid development that is happening in Macau, where there is no proper town planning enforcement is in place. It is casinos like Wynn Macau, Grand Lisboa and Galaxy Grand Waldo are building their casinos with total disregards to Macau’s height restrictions! At the one hand they want to encourage tourism, whilst on the other hand anything goes!

Now, the Lisboa and other casinos in Stanley Ho Hung-sun’s gaming company, Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM), are facing a horde of competitors. Ho, who had a government monopoly on Macau gaming for four decades until 2004, has seen his share of gambling revenue dive to 55 percent from 100 percent - and it is still shrinking.
