Adelson Says No More New Casino Concessions in Macau

Here is an interesting observation by David McKee from LasVegasAdvisor.com saying that Dr ’s days are numbered. Well we are not so sure if we can agree with him on that one!

Toward the bottom of an otherwise run-of-the-mill report on Las Vegas Sands‘ year-end numbers, Sands supremo Sheldon Adelson lets fly with a bombshell: Not only will there be no new casino concessions in 2009, when Chief Executive Edmund Ho leaves office, there will be fewer. (Bad news for Harrah’s, this. They’re really banking on a new round of concessions and, perhaps, subconcessions too.)

The question remain will they ever recover again to previous highs? It may be a blessing in disguise that Stanley Ho’s IPO has been blocked after all!

Las Vegas Sands Macau Gaming License May Be in Jeopardy

A District Court judge Wednesday set back efforts by casino operator Sheldon Adelson to keep sealed pretrial depositions and other business information that his attorneys said could threaten the billionaire’s growing Chinese operations.

Rusty Hardin and Sam Lionel, attorneys for the Las Vegas Sands Corp., argued during a hearing in a case filed more than 18 months ago that releasing the sealed information could put the casino operator’s gaming license in jeopardy.

Venetian Macau Opens Today

At last the world’s biggest casino opens in today, the most ambitious throw of the dice yet in a $24 billion effort to build a Las Vegas-style “neon alley” in this once-sleazy Chinese gambling enclave.

The hopes of more than a dozen hotel, casino and retail operators building on the “Cotai Strip” — 4 square km (1.5 square miles) of reclaimed land fusing two islands — are pinned on the Venetian Macao, built by U.S. operator Las Vegas Sands Corp.

Macau Gaming Q-1 Revenue Jumps Up 45%

’s first-quarter gaming revenue surged 44% from a year earlier as casinos opened in the past three years gained more customers.

The Chinese city’s gambling industry reaped 18.1bil patacas (US$2.25bil) of revenue, according to figures posted yesterday on the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau’s website.

Macau’s Gambling Problem

As we mentioned before, there is too much of a good thing in ! A small population of 508,000 with a workforce of 260,000 people, that needs to be 400,000 people by 2010. This is to support all those new casino’s, hotels and resorts that will be sprouting up all over . And we have not even talked about the drop in per table take which since 2002 has been a whopping 300%!
Global gaming and operators have been doubling down on new casino development in . Yet it could also be heading for a nasty shakeout thanks to a looming casino glut, some analysts warn.

At first glance, the casino development spending spree seems justified. ’s gaming revenues are growing an average of nearly 20% per year and were just shy of $7 billion last year, earning the enclave more than the entire Las Vegas strip. Avid Chinese gamblers, who account for 50% of the bettors, up from virtually zero five years ago, arrive in ever growing numbers.

Venetian Macau Construction Cost Blow-out

We already have mentioned a few times about the lack of quality labor and contractors in . The Venetian are not the only ones, Crown Macau, MGM Grand Macau, Grand Lisboa and Ponte 16 all have massive construction costs overruns. But then again we would imagine that their projected gaming income should be good enough to cover for these overruns!

An American casino giant building a new gaming district in says soaring costs have put up the price of the project up by as much as 40 percent, a media report said Friday.

Adelson Supports China Regime

Casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson, one of America’s wealthiest people, dismissed critics of China on Thursday, saying the Chinese are living a good life and the United States shouldn’t try to police the entire world.The capitalist from Las Vegas defended the communist regime as he checked on the progress of a $2.3 billion casino resort he is building in on China’s southeastern coast. The tiny city is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.

Adelson, ranked No. 3 of Forbes magazine’s list of the richest Americans, noted that many people, especially Congress members, like to criticize China for its human rights record and other problems. But he said he liked the way the Chinese run their country.
