Macau Labour Force Increases by 11,300 More

In the third quarter of 2007, total labour force was estimated at 317,500, of which 307,700 were employed and 9,800 unemployed, representing increases of 11,300 in the employed population and 600 in the unemployed population over the previous quarter.

Regarding the employed population, 53.1% were male.

One Hunderd and Fifty More Taxi’s to Hit Macau Roads

One hundred and fifty taxi licences are set to be issued this month which will raise the total number of taxis running in to almost 1,000, director of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) Tam Vai Man announced yesterday.

Speaking to the local media at the Sao Domingos Activity Centre, Senado Square, ahead of a community meeting, Mr Tam said 150 four-seating taxi licences will be issued in a eight-year term.

Hotel Developments Spurs Growth in Macau

The rapid development of the tourism sector in recent years has attracted openings of several new hotels. In 2006, there were 80 hotels and similar establishments in operation, which included 49 hotels and 31 guest-houses, providing a total of 12,915 guest rooms.

At the end of 2006, the number of persons engaged in the hotel and similar establishments totalled 14,158. Among them, 14,041 were working in hotels, accounting for 99% of the total, while 117 were working in the guest-houses.

Number of Hotel and Entertainment Employees On the Increase

The number of hotel and restaurant employees reached a record 30,563 in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 35 per cent on the same quarter of last year, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has announced.

The average monthly earnings of hotel and restaurant workers rose 18.9 per cent year on year to 7,078 patacas in March. While hotel room attendants earned an average of 4,659 patacas a month, waiting staff earned a monthly average of 4,915 patacas in March

The “king” of and Lisbon’s gaming sector is focused on Caravela Island, in the Bijago’s archipelago, which is considered by UNESCO to be an Ecological Biospheric Reserve, where Ho wants to set up a tourist resort with a casino, according to the Africa Monitor newsletter.

Combating Crime in Macau

Homicide, drug trafficking, forged documents, money laundering and human smuggling continue to bedevil . But there is hope, says security bureau coordinator Diamantino Santos.

It seems they are getting smarter. The police or the criminals? Perhaps both. According to official data, counterfeit currency cases in increased more than 50 percent during last year compared to those detected in 2005. An explanation? The higher the money flow, the higher the risk. However, information from the beginning of this year shows that it might get a little more complicated than that. The numbers may continue to rise in 2007: this year’s fake currency is getting so perfect that it’s deceiving more and more security systems.
