Macau International Airport to Expand
Written on February 2, 2007 by admin
The plan for expanding Macau’s international airport is expected to be concluded in 2012 and represent an investment of 4 billion patacas (US$500 million), director of the Macau airport management company, CAM, António Rato said Wednesday in Macau.
At a press conference, Rato said that initial construction work would extended the southern area of the passenger terminal.
The five-year development plan is the responsibility of Dutch company NACO.
Rato said that the expansion was fundamental because Macau airport was working at close to its maximum capacity of six million passengers, and that limit was expected to be reached in 2009, “with some difficulties already felt during periods of greater traffic.”
In 2006, Macau airport received over 4.976 million passengers, which was 17.06 percent more than in 2005.
Rato also said work was being undertaken at the cargo terminal to double its current capacity.
The second phase of the airport’s expansion will be concluded in 2012.
Lengthening the runway at the airport, a project drawn up around a year ago, is being reconsidered in order for the airport to continue operating during the building work.
