Macau Police Explodes Cache of Weapons Found in Tourist Street Hotel

Police in Macau today carried out a controlled explosion after finding a cache of weapons and explosives in a popular tourist street.
Two grenades, a revolver, a knife and bag of explosives along with a timer were found in a hotel in the territory’s so-called Souvenir Street in the heart of Macau’s tourist district.
Police cordoned off the street temporarily and detonated the explosives, Hong Kong’s government-run radio station RTHK said. There was no report of any arrests in connection with the incident.
There is no history of terrorist incidents in Macau, a former Portuguese colony which reverted to Chinese rule in 1999 and is best known for its casinos which draw gamblers from across Asia.
The densely-populated territory on the southern China coast, neighbouring Hong Kong, has seen rapid economic growth since 2003 when Las Vegas-owned casinos were allowed to open up.
