Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai Bridge to Go Ahead in 2008?

Written on February 17, 2008 by Macau

There could be significant progress to the Hong Kong--Zhuhai Bridge project this year, indicated a Hong Kong businessman who is one of its initiators.

Gordon Wu told media in Hong Kong and that the plan has entered into a ‘national infrastructure’ stage, and the Beijing State Council’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) will head the project.

Crucial issues, such as financing and protection of Chinese White Dolphins, have already been resolved, indicated Wu, and scores of other items in connection to the project will be resolved item by item.

A seabed tunnel measuring 20m deep will be built at the main navigation channel of the mouth of Pearl River, so that maritime transport will not be affected.

Enterprises in mainland China will lead the financing of the bridge, and those outside mainland jurisdiction will take part. The bidding procedures will also be announced ‘later’, he said.

Wu also indicated that how vehicles enter the respective territory is currently under study.

With only 50,000 Hong Kong vehicles being allowed to enter mainland China, using a bridge to service vehicles of such amount is ‘unreasonable’, said Wu. He believed that there could be ‘major breakthrough’ in this issue.

One of the possibilities is to construct a large carpark in , so that commodities and passengers from Hong Kong will eventually be connected using vehicles.

Another possibility is to allow all Hong Kong vehicles to enter Zhuhai using the bridge.

Wu appealed to all to be patient to the bridge, and expressed optimism that ‘good news’ about the project could be due within this year.

Wu gave these remarks after a communication session to and Hong Kong deputies of the National People’s Congress and members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Zhuhai, organised by the central government.

Reports by the NDRC, Ministries of Finance as well as Labour and Social Security were delivered during the session, and Vice-Chairman and Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Sheng Huaren made a speech on adhering the perfecting the People’s Congress system of China.

A speech was also made by the United Front Department of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party during the session.
