Venetian Macau Fire Victim Was Murdered

As was about to happen sooner or later, the Venetian Macao has won the title of having the first murder case at its Cotai Strip Casino. The 39-year-old Mainland woman linked to the Venetian fire was established by the Judiciary Police as having been strangled. Police arrested the alleged murderer on Friday before he managed to leave Macau. The woman also died that day, two days after the fire that broke out at the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel on Wednesday.
The suspect was a 38-year-old surnamed Tan who traveled to Macau from China’s Zhuhai city on a Chinese pass on December 12. The Mainland man had already admitted to police that he had murdered the woman in the hotel room as he was unable to repay a US$25,000(200,000 Pataca) loan after gambling the money away, police spokesman Choi Iat Peng said.
Mr Choi added that the man then set fire to the mattress where the woman’s body was lying on in an attempt to destroy evidence. The man was caught by Customs at about 7.30pm on Friday when he was preparing to escape into the Mainland from a shore adjacent to Tam Kung Temple in Coloane.
The police spokesman said the victim came to Macau as a tourist on Tuesday and stayed at the Venetian alone on the Cotai Strip. She met the suspect in a Macau casino where she acted as a middle-person and arranged a US$25,000(200,000 Pataca) loan for the borrower.
The suspect, Mr Choi said, was a frequent gambler traveling from the Mainland. He lost the lump sum in the casino and failed to repay the loan to the woman. Mr Choi said the suspect and the victim then went together into the room to rest for the afternoon until the suspect strangled the woman while she was asleep.
The woman managed to resume a heartbeat once, upon being admitted into the hospital, but finally lost her life two days later. The suspect was passed to the Public Prosecutions Office yesterday. He will be charged with the crimes of murder and arson and could face up to 25-years imprisonment if convicted.
