Macau Company Registrations On The Way Up

Information from the Statistics and Census Service showed that in 2006, 3,110 newly incorporated companies were established, with MOP557.63 million in registered capital. Compared with 2005, the number of newly incorporated companies went up 1.2% whereas their registered capital decreased by 6.4%.
These newly incorporated companies were mostly in the Wholesale and Retail sector (905). Among the stockholders of the newly incorporated companies, 59.7% were Macao residents. In addition, 90.8% of the newly incorporated companies were limited companies. On the other hand, 254 companies were dissolved, with MOP682.87 million in registered capital. These dissolved companies were mostly in the Wholesale and Retail sector (73), and 93.7% of the dissolved companies were limited companies.
In the fourth quarter of 2006, 797 companies were newly incorporated, with MOP142.87 million in registered capital, which increased by 10.5% and 107.9% respectively over the same quarter of 2005. These newly incorporated companies were mostly in the Wholesale and Retail sector (224), followed by Construction (157), Real Estate (131) and Business Services (125). On the other hand, 66 companies were dissolved in the fourth quarter, with MOP7.78 million in registered capital. Among them, most were engaged in Wholesale and Retail (21), and Business Services (12).
Among the stockholders of the newly incorporated companies, 60.7% were Macao residents. In addition, the newly incorporated companies with capital of MOP50,000 or less accounted for 69.6% (555 companies) of the total number, but their capital only made up 11.1% of the total. Meanwhile, 723 of the newly incorporated companies were limited companies.
Based on the residence of the stockholders, the capital of the newly incorporated companies in the fourth quarter of 2006 mostly came from Macao (MOP66.98 million), followed by Mainland China (MOP32.88 million) and Hong Kong (MOP23.70 million). Among the capital from the Pan-Pearl River Delta provinces, Guangdong province topped the list with MOP4.69 million.
As regards the combination of the residence of stockholders, 636 of the newly incorporated companies were established by stockholders from a single country/region, the majority of which (405 companies) were established solely by Macao stockholders, followed by those from Hong Kong (126 companies).
The number of the newly incorporated companies with stockholders from Macao and other countries/regions was 120, of which 54 were joint ventures of Macao and Mainland China stockholders and 52 were of Macao and Hong Kong stockholders.
The newly incorporated companies with stockholders solely from countries/regions other than Macao totalled 41, of which 14 were joint ventures of Hong Kong and the British Virgin Islands stockholders and 4 were of Hong Kong and Mainland China stockholders.
