July 02, 2006 | The Portugal News | Portugal and Macao signed an agreement last Friday, giving the Macao House in Lisbon quasi diplomatic status.
“It’s not an embassy, but it’s also not a club”, Portuguese Foreign Minister Diogo Freitas do Amaral said after the signing ceremony with Macao’s chief executive, Edmund Ho. Freitas do Amaral reaffirmed Portugal’s interest in bolstering ties to the former Lisbon-administered Chinese territory and to Beijing.
“We see the future of Macao as a platform for Portugal and other European Union countries to penetrate China and Asia with their products, services and technologies”, the foreign minister said.
Ho, who was ending a two-day visit to Lisbon, said he was “very impressed” with Portugal’s commitment to strengthening relations with Macau and China.
Beijing has mandated Macao to serve as its preferential hub for trade and investment ties with the Lisbon-headquartered, eight-nation Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP). Lusa
