Pete Sampras Beats Roger Federer in Macau

Pete Sampras rolled back the years to beat Roger Federer in the final encounter of their three-match series, winning 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 at the Venetian Macao in Macau.
Sampras and Federer have been travelling round south-east Asia for the last week and the former world number one has been getting progressively closer to his successor as the series has worn on.
Pistol Pete finally got the better of the Swiss star to claim a victory, although he had already lost the series after Federer won in Seoul and Kuala Lumpur.
The American took the first set on a tie break after both players had broken each others serve once in the opening 12 games.
Both players had chances to win the tie break but it was Sampras who managed to capitalise on his mini break to win it 8-6.
Sampras secured another break of serve in the second set but this time Federer could not manage to respond and the 36-year-old sealed a deserved victory.
Federer only had one opportunity to play against Sampras before the American retired in 2002 and clearly enjoyed facing the 14-time Grand Slam champion.
He said: “The surface was really quick and Pete was playing really well and hardly making any mistakes.”
Sampras admitted conditions had helped him heavy serve, adding: “I got going a little bit today, but it could have gone either way in the first set.”
Federer is currently two championships behind Sampras’ record of 14 and could surpass that landmark with a successful campaign next season.
