With the accelerating social and economical developments of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) in recent years, the demand for telecommunications services has been sustainably increasing at a rapid pace. To cope with the future development of the telecommunications services, the Government of MSAR elaborated the Digit Adding Plan of Telephone Numbers, after undergoing a thorough study and consulting the respective sector.
As reported by the Macau Government Tourist Office, starting from October 1, 2006 , the following arrangement will be implemented:
- The initial digits “28″ are added to all 6-digit commercial and residential telephone numbers as well as fax numbers.
- The initial digit “6″ is added to the mobile telephone numbers.
- The period of adaptation, during which the dialing of both telephone numbers (numbers before and after the digits added) is allowed, carries out until the end of February 2007.
- Starting from March 1, 2007 , the parallel dialing mode will be terminated.
- Starting from March 1, 2007 , all newly apply DDI numbers will be upgraded to 8-digit and from January 1, 2008 , all current DDI numbers will have the prefix “8″ added.
- Telephone numbers for customer services with initial digit “1” and emergency telephone numbers with initial digit “9” (such as 999) remain unchanged.
